When Abel Ferrara's unforgettable Bad Lieutenant was released back in 1992, who could've imagined that it'd become an actual franchise?

A standalone, Nicolas Cage-starring follow-up, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, was directed by Werner Herzog in 2009 which, while brilliant, failed to make a dent commercially, suggesting the dubious IP was basically over.

But a third film was unceremoniously announced last year - Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, which will revolve around a degenerate Tokyo cop (Shun Oguri) who crosses paths with an FBI agent (Lily James) investigating the disappearance of a politician's daughter.

Best of all? The also-standalone threequel is being helmed by the legendary Takashi Miike, whose knack for directing the absolute hell out of pulpy ultra-violent noir is firmly established throughout his storied career.

Nobody expected a new Bad Lieutenant in the year of our lord 2026 - or ever, really - but with this level of talent involved it's certainly appreciated.

Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo will release sometime in September.
