Wes Craven: Every Movie Ranked Worst To Best
18. My Soul To Take
Now, there's some differing opinions on this movie. The penultimate movie before Craven's death and coming after a five year break after Cursed and Red Eye didn't quite hit the mark, My Soul To Take is either an attempt at capturing the Craven charm of old for optimistic viewers, or a cheap reliance on his own formulaic tropes for those less favourably inclined.
Honestly though, as much as Craven puts a lot of love into what he does, My Soul To Take feels very much like he's thrown all his best film ideas at the wall to see what sticks. Like A Nightmare On Elm Street, it features a supernatural killer intent on tracking down teenagers linked to his death, like Scream, it has a knife wielding serial killer, and like all his films, it has some pretty badly written dialogue for young people since Craven was definitely not so young at this point.
It's complicated, full of explanatory dialogue, and something entirely unbecoming considering Craven had already made the best version of these concepts. A step backwards.
