What Critics HATED About Venom
4. The Action Is Sloppy
As several of the more scathing reviews have pointed out, the action in Venom leaves a lot to be desired. The effects are mostly brilliant, so that's not where the problem lies, though. The real issue is in the way the action is choreographed.
Aside from the first time we see Venom really taking hold of Eddie for a fight, the choreography is uninspired and lacks any sort of real directing flair that isn't obliterated by the necessary framing of heavy duty effects work. There's no personality and even being able to focus on Venom in them is rather difficult at times.
Worst of all, the climax that we're sold as a major sequence ends up lasting a surprisingly short amount of time. Riot is not the major threat he's billed as, the fight does not have insurmountable odds and even the emotional weight in there is undone by the speed with which any real danger is dealt with.
