What Does The Ending Of Fantastic Beasts Really Mean?

9. Gellert Grindelwald Is Locked Up

Fantastic Beasts Grindelwald

The last time we saw Gellert Grindelwald, he was locked in wizarding prison Nurmengard - a grinning wretch at his most pathetic, having been locked away for decades. But there is a lot to come between the end of Fantastic Beasts - which sees him locked away in America - and the future when Voldemort goes to take the Elder Wand off him.

Sure, he's in prison now, but there's something about Johnny Depp's wry smile that suggests he's not actually going to be captive for long. After all, if the canon still stands, at this point Grindelwald is already the master of the Elder Wand, and basically the most powerful wizard alive.

Maybe they'll change that - Rowling has already changed the canon by having Scamander expelled from Hogwarts - but what is clear is that Grindelwald will return to escape and become magical Hitler.
