Gandalf's contribution to the events of The Lord of the Rings can't be underestimated.

Gandalf was one of the five wizards, or Istari, sent by the angelic Valar to protect Middle Earth from the dark force of Sauron which was presenting an ever increasing threat. He was the most persistent and successful in his purpose, recognizing Bilbo's ring as Sauron's and convincing him to leave it to Frodo, and was the most ardent supporter of destroying it in Mount Doom. He was reincarnated as Gandalf the White after giving his life to defeat the balrog and was sent back to complete his quest. Throughout the war he was a voice of wisdom and sense, as well as giving his advice on strategic matters, leading the garrison in the defence of Minas Tirith.

He was chosen by Aragorn to crown him as king of Gondor and was present at his marriage to Arwen. Later he travelled with the hobbits to the edge of the Shire before departing to go and visit Tom Bombadil.

As he bore Narya, one of the rings of power, he departed Middle Earth with the other ring-bearers, possibly taking his horse Shadowfax with him. In Valinor he took back his original name Olorin and was remembered with great respect in Middle Earth.

Huge fan of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. Watches anything with Liam Neeson in it.
