What The Avengers: Infinity War Cast Look Like In The Comics
24. Ebony Maw
In the Comics:
As one of Thanos's Black Order, Ebony Maw is a shrewd tactician, able to use his abilities as a whisperer to supernaturally persuade others to do as he wishes.
He used this to control Doctor Strange during one of Thanos's attacks on Earth. During one of Thanos's defeats, he manipulated his son Thane to become better than his father, before Thane was defeated and captured by Corvus Glaive, while the Maw uses his power to convince his captors to free him.
In the Film:
Referred to by Tony Stark as "Squidward" in comedic fashion, Ebony Maw in the Infinity War film shows no capacity for mind control or persuasion, but is able to move any object telekinetically, no matter the size or material (though he's mostly seen manipulating metal).
He acts as something of a herald, Thanos's proclaimer who spreads his 'good word'. He's sent to retrieve the Time Stone from Doctor Strange, and attempts to torture him into removing the spell that protects it, before he's launched into space when Spider-Man and Iron Man (and Strange's cloak) come to the rescue.
He's played in effective, theatrical fashion by Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, identical in appearance, if not in powers, to his comics counterpart.
