Which Suicide Squad Movie Is Better?
9. Narrative
This is a weak point for both movies, admittedly, because each is understandably more concerned with focusing on its characters than on dense, nuanced storytelling.
But there's little denying that the 2016 movie's story isn't just basic - it's a mess.
Even in the Extended Cut, Enchantress' (Cara Delevingne) plan to resurrect her brother Incubus (Alain Chanoine) is ill-defined and insanely dull, leading to a disappointingly typical beam in the sky, end-of-the-world finale.
Gunn sensibly keeps things simpler and less-convoluted, with a typical men-on-a-mission story which takes an amusing left-turn into a monster movie later on. It's hardly the most inspired narrative, but it's elevated significantly by the strong character work and creative action.
Thematically Ayer's film is meanwhile pretty empty - not that every superhero movie needs to be about something - but Gunn's offers up some unexpectedly cutting political commentary on American foreign policy of all things.
WINNER: Again not a strong suit for either movie, but Gunn has a much firmer handle on his story, keeping it streamlined in order to serve the characters and set-pieces.
