Which Suicide Squad Movie Is Better?
6. Visuals
A lot of people complain about Suicide Squad 2016's visuals being too dark and drab, and while some added splashes of neon would've absolutely been welcome, the film's 2.39:1 aspect ratio arguably makes it look more cinematic than Gunn's film.
It certainly resembles an expensive movie, and cinematographer Roman Vasyanov does his best to generate a gritty mood, though the deference towards goofy VFX in the third act is a real shame.
Gunn meanwhile opts for a tighter 1.85:1 aspect ratio due to shooting his film entirely in IMAX, and while this occasionally threatens to evoke a TV-like aesthetic, Gunn has a far looser and more energetic approach to his camerawork.
There's a real dynamism to Gunn's filmmaking, combined with fantastic CGI throughout - particularly for King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) and Starro - which ensure it pops visually in every single scene.
WINNER: They're both handsome, well-made movies to a point, though the 2016 version would've benefited from a more colourful palette and more creative VFX. Gunn runs away with this one.
