Which Suicide Squad Movie Is Better?

7. The Villain

Suicide Squad
Warner Bros.

One of the biggest complaints about Suicide Squad 2016 is its utter non-event of a villain.

Enchantress could've been an intriguing antagonist in theory, but she's treated here as a generic, annoying, hip-shaking weirdo, unaided by wonky visual effects and Cara Delevingne's flat performance in the role.

And that's without even getting into the hideous CGI horrorshow that is Incubus.

The 2021 film meanwhile has the one-two punch of Starro and Gaius Grieves aka The Thinker (Peter Capaldi), and it goes without saying that a gigantic murderous extraterrestrial starfish is infinitely more fun than anything Ayer's villains had to offer.

WINNER: Neither film offers up particularly nuanced villains, but Gunn knows to have fun with his ridiculous baddies, while Ayer's movie treats them with self-serious reverence yet does little to make them interesting. 2021 wins again.
