Who Made Infinity Stones In MCU?
4. The Time Stone
Another deviation from the source material, the Time Stone was unearthed in the MCU within Doctor Strange. Originally nothing more than a relatively powerful magic artefact (okay, saying ‘nothing more’ may have been uncalled for), the Eye of Agamotto was re-imagined as a host for the Time Stone in Doctor Strange.
This was done as the director of the film, Scott Derrickson, thought that the original version was too powerful to be used within the film. It may sound ridiculous to think that anything beyond an Infinity Stone would be considered ‘too powerful' but the man had a point. A mere handful of its powers include granting psionic abilities (basically magic telepathy), dispelling any illusions and carrying itself into the astral plane.
Within the context of the film this version may have been a bit much. Though acting as a host to the Time Stone, the Eye of Agamotto granted the MCU an interesting way to introduce the Infinity Stone. Its complete control over time, from controlling the past, present and future of an individual object to being able to revert time itself on a huge scale, makes the Time Stone a fairly formidable tool.
This was aptly shown during Doctor Strange during the final battle, where Doctor Strange used an endless cycle to break down Dormammu’s will and result in a draw between the two. Given that they were in Dormammu’s Dark Dimension, where he is more or less omnipotent, the Time Stone has shown its worth as an Infinity Stone.
