The decade that gave us the original PlayStation was also the birthplace of many of the film franchises we know and love today. For decades now, Hollywood had been envious of the success of the James Bond franchise and were more determined than ever to craft their own set of pictures which would draw in cinemagoers year after year for new instalments of their favourite series. Whether science fiction, fantasy, horror, or drama, many of the favourites that still release films today got their start in '90s.

One of the first of the decade which is still hugely popular is the Jurassic Park franchise, which began in 1993, and with the latest entry in the series, Jurassic World Dominion, released in 2022. Other notable franchises that cropped up in the decade were Disney's hugely popular Toy Story, Mission: Impossible, and The Mummy.

Horror movie franchises also fared particularly well during this time, with one of the longest serving horror series beginning in the 1990s. The franchise in question is Wes Craven's Scream, which first released way back in 1996. Since then, the flick has had a slew of sequels, with the latest instalment being released earlier this year.
