Another reason the 1990s reigned supreme over today for movies was the reign and unmatched run of iconic directors, who spent the decade constantly trying to outdo each other in a bid to have the biggest film of the year.

The big names of the day included Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, James Cameron, and Martin Scorsese, to name a few. All of them were at the absolute top of their game, frequently setting and breaking their own box office records throughout the decade. Each put out multiple seminal films during that time which have been regarded as classics since release and remained incredibly popular to this day.

The decade also saw the rise of several hugely influential independent film directors who were at their career peaks. One of these directors whose independent releases from the decade still remain wildly popular today, is Quentin Tarantino. Following the release of his 1992 debut Reservoir Dogs, he went on to release 1994's Pulp Fiction and 1997's Jackie Brown.

The directing duo of the Coen Brothers also released their most popular and influential works in the 1990s, including 1996's Fargo and 1998's The Big Lebowski
