Why The Mummy Was A Disaster

3. The Marketing Made It Into A Joke

The Mummy struggled right out of the gate thanks to an infamous marketing gaffe which turned one of the movie's trailers into a meme. Back in December, Universal accidentally released a version of the movie's trailer without the correct sound mix, which gained notoriety online for Tom Cruise's dubbed-over scream, which was clearly re-recorded by someone else.

Though some suspected Universal deliberately leaked the incomplete trailer in order to "meme-ify" the film and heighten its box office potential, it doesn't seem likely, considering it just led to people mocking it rather than professing it a must-see movie.

Plus, even with the trailer screw up, The Mummy failed to track high on social media chatter leading up to its release, so the writing for its mediocre showing was very much on the wall.
