20 INSANE Horror Movie Moments You'll Never Stop Thinking About

12. Matthew Gets Body-Snatched - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Philip Kaufman's 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers is one of the few horror remakes to categorically improve upon the original, and a big part of the reason for this is its fearlessly bleak ending.

Later in the story, survivors Nancy Bellicec (Veronica Cartwright) and Matthew (Donald Sutherland) realise they can trick the pod people and blend in with them by hiding their emotions.

And so in the final scene, Nancy is shown maintaining her guise, but when she meets up with Matthew, he suddenly reveals that he's been replaced with a pod, letting out a piercing high-pitched scream and pointing at her.

Though we don't see what becomes of Nancy after this, the implication is clear - the pods win and humanity as we know it is effectively wiped out.

Anyone who's seen the 1956 original was likely expecting a sunnier resolution - not Donald Sutherland pulling a nightmare fuel face you'll never be able to unsee.
