Will Smith: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

1. Capt. James West - Wild Wild West

Wild Wild West could well be one of the most famous turkey in Hollywood history, thanks to a certain Kevin Smith Superman movie, and some deliriously odd creative choices that nailed the lid on the Western's coffin, before some much smarter film-makers started making revisionist genre additions years later. Smith plays former Civil War hero Jim West, an all-guns-blazing hero, forced to work with Kevin Kline's US Marshall with a penchant for disguises, and his performance is completely destroyed by a ridiculous plot, a comically poor script and the director's obvious belief that building a steam-punk Wild West would be enough to hide the fact that he has no idea how to create likable human characters. Wild Wild West feels like an ADHD fever dream, with a giant mechanical spider thrown in to distract from some serious problems at its heart, and though Smith and Kline struggle manfully to offer memorable performances, they're doomed from the start, and there's no room for anyone to escape this particular monstrosity with any dignity intact.
