Friedkin also played his part in Matthew McConaugheys recent career reinvention as a serious actor of note (the McCona-sance as it has become known) after directing him in the critically and commercially acclaimed thriller, Killer Joe, in which the 2014 Oscar winner starred as the titular Texas police detective who moonlights from his day job as a contract killer.
