Wonder Woman: 9 Signs It Will Redeem The DCEU
Wonder Woman is going to save the DCEU from oblivion and put Marvel on notice.
The DCEU is in trouble. While Warner Bros' lineup of superhero films have delighted hardcore fans, audiences at large have been more ambivalent towards them and critics have been downright hostile. If the DCEU doesn't pull itself out of its critical slump soon, the DC brand may be irreparably tarnished in the eyes of moviegoers. Ticket buyers might decide to skip DCEU movies if they believe that DC is only capable of delivering an inferior product, which could spell doom for the franchise.
Thankfully, the DCEU has a champion waiting in the wings to beat back the onslaught of negative reviews: Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman's amazing trailers and positive buzz have already done a lot to make people forget the negativity surrounding Suicide Squad and BvS. Better still, it seems that Warner Bros has learned some valuable lessons from the critical shellacking of the DCEU and the studio is making an effort to correct some of its mistakes.
If Wonder Woman is a critical success, the fortunes of the DCEU may well turn around - and these signs all point to it being the movie that breaks DC's losing streak.
9. There's Humour
One of the biggest criticisms against DCEU's movies is their perceived lack of fun and humour. Both BvS and Suicide Squad had touches of levity and comic relief sprinkled throughout their runtimes, but at not nearly high enough a volume for audiences and critics conditioned by Marvel movies to expect loads of quips. If the DCEU wants to get on the good side of its critics, it has to prove that it can deliver genuine laughs to go along with the comic book action mayhem.
Wonder Woman's trailers have signalled that DC intends to take a page from Marvel's playbook and make audiences laugh at how ridiculous the concept of a superhero can be. A streak of tongue-in-cheek humour enlivened Wonder Woman's ads, especially the material centred on Wonder Woman's sidekick Etta Candy.
Until now, DC films have lacked comic relief characters and the addition of a legitimately funny supporting player could help make the DCEU more palatable to critics. The best part about the addition of Etta Candy to the DCEU's roster is that she's genuinely funny. The jokes in the trailers actually landed without feeling forced or groan-inducing, which is a great sign for the franchise's future.
