Wonder Woman Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs
1. The Third Act Is Typical Superhero Fare
As sharp and entertaining as the movie's first 90 minutes are, it does lose its way somewhat when entering the final stretch, becoming decidedly less interesting as two extremely predictable plot beats unfold.
The first is a twist that's been widely known for months now, so making a big deal out of it is rather unfortunate, and the other is a dramatic necessity that nevertheless works pretty well.
The real issue with the movie's final reel, though, is the climactic battle between Diana and Ares, a typically CGI-doused, laughably over-the-top nonsense finale that's decidedly average-at-best compared to the rest of the movie.
Thankfully the prior two acts are so great that it's fairly easy to forgive it devolving into more conventional superhero fare in the end, but it's still a shame that third act wasn't more unique.
But on the whole, Wonder Woman is the riveting female-led superhero movie everyone wanted it to be, so here's everything that works...
