Woody Allen: 5 Awesome Movies And 5 That Sucked

1. Manhattan

Has New York ever looked more beautiful, more rich in aesthetic than it does here? Probably not. Shot in black & white, the movie is one of the greatest tributes to New York, flowing beautifully from one shot to the next. The opening five minute sequence is an ode to New York City that plays out to Gershwin€™s €œRhapsody In Blue€ and captures everything that needs to be said about the stunning cinematography that Woody and Gordon Willis managed to create. After the minor blip with Interiors, where Allen tried his best Bergmann impression and failed, he hits top form again with a story that focuses on the trials and tribulations of relationships. Allen does brilliantly again providing his usual comedy and wit as the story€™s protagonist. Diane Keaton is wonderful as ever, with a brief cameo by Meryl Streep that highlights the complications that moving into a relationship can provide. Again like Annie Hall, it needs multiple viewings to be fully appreciated, but for a different reasons, it€™s incredibly difficult not to be swept away by the beautiful visuals that Allen provides. At times I catch myself missing dialogue simply for staring at the sheer beauty of what is on screen. A masterpiece that is truly great and utterly deserving of the status it has garnered since its release.
