16. Moon Rock Aliens - Apollo 18
Apollo 18 touted the incredibly inspired concept of setting a found footage horror flick on the moon, as three American astronauts head there on a secret expedition only to be waylaid by... something.
The marketing claimed that whatever the astronauts encountered there, it was the reason that the U.S. never returned to the moon, and so it had to be something pretty horrific, right?
Well, after a whole ton of build up, we find out that the astronauts discover a race of spider-like alien creatures on the moon which are able to disguise themselves as moon rocks.
Oh.
After such a tense first two acts, this payoff unfortunately fell horribly flat, largely due to the inherent silliness of the whole rock-alien idea, and how awkward it looks on screen per the low-budget film's dubious visual effects.
Apollo 18 is yet another found footage film that confirms the virtues of minimalism, because nything the audience imagined would have doubtlessly been scarier than moon rock spiders.
