X-Men: 10 Major Plot Holes Days Of Future Past Created

5. Why Did Xavier Originally Decide To Reopen The School?

When Wolverine goes back in time he discovers that Charles Xavier has seemingly given up his mission to provide a safe haven for runaway mutants. After Raven Darkholme's departure and the subsequent loss of his legs, Xavier became depressed, shut off and dependent on a drug that allowed him to walk at the cost of his powers. It's pretty grim. Wolverine tries and fails to talk him back around, but of course patience isn't his strong suit. He eventually decides to let Charles enter his mind, so that he can communicate with his future self, and only then does Charles fully understand the importance of his power and his mission to all of muntantkind. It's a powerful scene, but we do have to wonder: Before Wolverine ever arrived in the past, how did Xavier come to have this epiphany on his own? The Xavier we meet in the original trilogy showed no signs of ever having doubted himself, or fearing his powers. It's possible we suppose that it was the news of Raven assassinating Trask that woke him out of his depression, but we never actually got an explanation.
