X-Men: Apocalypse - 10 Big Storylines That Should Come Next

9. Astonishing X-Men

On the other hand, the films could go in the exact opposite direction. New X-Men sought to put the mutant team apart from their superhero brethren, with all sorts of weird stuff about genetics and transfuturism and some genuinely grotesque characters. Astonishing X-Men was a direct reaction to that, returning the characters to their familiar tights and big epic sci-fi stories. Riffing on the classic storylines of the seventies by Chris Claremont, John Byrne and Dave Cockrum, the first three arcs of Astonishing X-Men tied together to tell the story of Ord Of Breakworld, an alien who comes to Earth wielding a potential €œcure€ to the mutant gene €“ an aspect of the comics that was used in X-Men: The Last Stand, a film we've all tried to forget and now isn't in continuity for the movies. Which means this is ripe for the picking; as is the fact that Joss Whedon, director of the first two Avengers films (and not returning for the third and fourth) wrote it. Even if Whedon couldn't be convinced into bringing his sweeping cosmic story €“ eventually the X-Men hotfoot it to Breakworld to deal with Ord directly €“ to the screen, his name attached to it must surely make the arc appealing to Fox.
