Around the time that both Elle Fanning and Chloe Moretz were mentioned as in talks to play Grey, True Grit star Steinfeld was also rumoured to be on the shortlist. Since stealing the show in the revivalist Western from the Cohens, Steinfeld has had a busy time, leaping through genres with reckless abandon, and playing the super-powered mutant wouldn't be too much of a stretch after her performance in the upcoming action comedy Barely Lethal (a teenage special ops agent infiltrates a school). Okay, so maybe that's a stretch, but she's a good actress, which is basically all that matters. Would She Work? The key selling point here is that Steinfeld actually somewhat resembles Moretz - not just in physical appearance but in the spirit she brings to her characters. In True Grit she gave her role remarkable - occasionally precocious - intelligence, and she would undoubtedly fit the idea of Grey as a genius.
