X-Men Movies: Ranked From Worst To Best

4. X-Men: First Class

Had Matthew Vaughn had his intended way, he would have been involved in more films than Bryan Singer, and we might have had a different tone for the franchise, entirely. He was originally intended to take Singer's place on The Last Stand, he was originally charged with helming Days Of Future Past, and he of course brought First Class to the screen. But what he didn't quite bring was Singer's spirit and his obvious passion for the characters, and it shows in the different tone of the reboot. That isn't to say the film is in any way bad - on the contrary it is extremely entertaining - but like The Last Stand there is an over-reliance on the wrong characters, and some of the younger players just aren't as worthy of attention as the old cast. Best Moment Fassbender's Magneto steals the show, and while the climactic Cuban missile crisis sequence is the film's tense best, his goading and assassination of the tailor and the pig farmer is almost Tarantino-like in its power. Worst Moment The plot-holes it creates, while dismissable at the time thanks to the film's intention to be a true reboot, are rather problematic when taken in the context of the franchise as a whole. And Nicholas Hoult's Beast is no more than a face-pulling moron for most of his screen-time after his transformation.
