It was Professor X who brought together the New Mutants in the first place, scouring the Earth for gifted young individuals in need of guidance. He bolted rather quickly from being their chief instructor, however, leaving the job instead in the capable hands of...Magneto, Master Of Magnetism! The on-again, off-again villain was headmaster for a good while. In fact, in the original New Mutants series, he was their longest-running leader. Between New Mutants #35 through to #75 he was apparently reformed, won over to Xaviers school and operating it in many ways far better than his former friend and rival ever did. Magneto was a big part of crossovers like Mutant Massacre and Fall Of The Mutants. After those two events, which proved fatal for members of the core X-Men team and other supporting characters, Magneto became even more fiercely over-protective of the team, to the point where his rules were almost made to be broken by the rebellious teens. Seeing either Fassbender or McKellen as the loving-yet-tough Magneto could be a laugh.
