X-Men Relaunch Wishlist: 7 Things We Want To See
3. Address The Young X-Men Issue
At this point, the teenage versions of the original X-Men from the past have been hanging out in the present for three years real-time. Maybe in the decompressed Marvel timeline, that’s only been two weeks or so, but this has gotten ridiculous. This is the type of thing that should last a story arc or two - not years. How could these people ever hope to return to the past and resume their lives as normal? Why haven’t there been any world-ending paradoxes coming about because of this? There’s no way to solve it easily and the longer they wait, the harder it will be to fix.
It just makes no sense. Why would Hank McCoy knowingly try to cure his mutation when he’s fully aware that it will fail and turn him into a furry blue monster? Causality? Would Jean Grey be able to go back and continue to live her life knowing that someday she’ll freak out and destroy an entire planet? How is the young Iceman gay but the older one never was? Even if they tried their best to live their lives in the best way possible to maintain the timeline, mistakes would be made. It’s the Butterfly Effect. Letting them stick around in the present is totally irresponsible of everyone involved.
The young Cyclops is now a member of Champions, which is just misguided. The younger versions should not be integrating into the rest of the Marvel Universe. It will only make getting rid of them even harder and that absolutely must happen. It’s unavoidable. At some point, they’re going to have to get rid of the younger versions and presumably wipe their memories of everything they’ve experienced in the present to avoid destroying reality. Maybe the Time Gem will be involved. It might have to be!
And the thing is, the solution to all of this will probably be incredibly convoluted and stupid. It’ll probably be an event that lasts most of a year or more and gets delayed. At least if Marvel sticks to business as usual.
