X-Men: 9 Things That Must Happen In The Next Film

8. It's Time To Lose The Professor X And Magneto Conflict For A While

X Men Sequel

The driving force behind Matthew Vaughn's First Class was the friendship and subsequent conflict between Professor X and Magneto, culminating in the tragic moment when Charles is paralysed and their ideological differences push them apart. It's a fairly emotional scene, and left plenty of scope for a continued exploration of the relationship.

Things are expanded in Days Of Future Past, and once again we witness Magneto's slippery loyalty flip between good and evil. In Apocalypse, however, the whole thing just feels contrived. What was once compelling has steadily become more and more forced, and though McAvoy and Fassbender are amazing screen presences, a fourth go around would be completely redundant.

That's not to say ditch the characters entirely, but given Apocalypse's ending - in which Magneto once again swaps from "evil" to "good" - why not let us see them as friends again for once. Or separate them entirely. Just don't make their turbulent relationship a central focus, lest it bog down another climax. How much more satisfying would it be to see an ending that hinges on the relief or joy of the entire team, or one of the new heroes coming into their own as a mutant? There's way more scope than just another Magneto/Charles resolution.
