X-Men Apocalypse: 13 Reasons It's A Huge Disappointment

12. Apocalypse Is Corny & Dull

The writing has been on the wall about this one ever since those first images of the character dropped online last summer, and it's unfortunate to report that the screen version of Apocalypse just isn't very good.

For starters, his origin story at the beginning of the film (which depicts Apocalypse transferring his consciousness from an old man into Oscar Isaac's body) is woefully corny, feeling like it belongs in a B-movie like The Mummy or something.

Then there's his scheme, which as mentioned just isn't very imaginative or interesting, as well as the fact that he's too small and lacks the presence and all-powerful stature of his comic book equivalent.

Oscar Isaac tries to imbue the character with menace, but really there wasn't much benefit to casting him here, as his performance is for the most part fairly anonymous.

And finally, despite one of Apocalypse's powers being the ability to change his size, the only time we see it is during a "mental battle" between himself and Xavier, which while cool, doesn't actually exist in the real world, so feels like a cop-out.

Basically, Kinberg and Bryan Singer massively nerfed Apocalypse's abilities and power level to make him a more manageable screen villain, and as such many comic book fans are likely to be thoroughly underwhelmed by his depiction here.
