Apathy with unrelenting destruction has really amped up in recent years, and for good reason; while CGI allows incredibly vast decimation, because it's so big there's no human element. Well, until you remember just how many people live in these metropolitan areas. All of this is compounded when we're dealing with continuing franchises - Independence Day could destroy every landmark going to raise the stakes of a single film, but when there's another X-Men/Batman/Avengers coming out in a year or two, it's harder to explain.

Marvel and DC have addressed this head-on to varying degrees of success in Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. Meanwhile, X-Men: Apocalypse only steered into it more, not only showing extreme destruction, but also hinting at some haunting implications; Magneto may have stopped eventually, but he was messing with the very foundation of the Earth for long enough to decimate cities around the globe. That's going to leave more than just a little mark - at best millions of people died, at worst the entire polarity of the world is damaged and we're all doomed.

But no, the film paints it as an unconditionally happy ending - the generals in the war room even celebrate that total crisis was averted. They're in for a rude awakening.
