14. The Star Wars Gag

It's not a superhero movie these days without a Star Wars gag.

When Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Jubilee and Jean Grey "escape" the school to go the mall (where the cut Dazzler Easter Egg scene would have been it seems), they go to the cinema and see Return Of The Jedi. They come out riffing on the film and on the comic book movie industry.

In conversation they talk about sequels that aren't afraid to go dark (like X2) and then Jean Grey says that it's common knowledge that the third movie "is always the worst". As tongue in cheek moments go, it might as well have exploded out of the side of her head: and while it could be a jab at The Last Stand, critics of the movie will use it against Apocalypse now.
