Ian McKellen was just about the only member of the original X-Men cast not to turn up in DOFP's new timeline, which given that it was all set in the school isn't too surprising, but if he'd survived wouldn't he at least have been mentioned after everything that's happened? We've seen Charles and Erik struggle to to reconcile their opposing view-points with their painfully impossible friendship for the best part of five films now, so what better way to conclude their shared journey and end the threat of Apocalypse than with a heroic and meaningful death for the master of magnetism? The villain's redemption is a bit of a hoary old story trope, and one that can come across as cheesy if handled badly (think James Francos Harry Osborn in Spider-Man 3) but then Magneto has always been more complex than the traditional bad guy. It would make a fitting end to the story of these X-Men, particularly Charles and Erik, if his sacrifice was to usher in a new age of mutant understanding before Fox rolls out the spin-offs and starts setting up its expanded universe. How else do you think Apocalypse will change X-Men films forever? Share your thoughts below in the comments thread.
