X-Men: Apocalypse Reviews- 12 Early Reactions You Need To Know
9. The New Guys Are Great...
Thankfully, even the more scathing of reviews reserve positive space for the new introductions to the franchise. The Independent says the "new film feels re-energised" by the introduction of new faces, which is presumably precisely as Singer and Fox would have wanted it.
Variety also says they're good additions, even if they're not given enough time to shine:
"That lineup isnt short on talent or charisma, and the addition of series newcomers Oscar Isaac (as titular mega-mutant baddie Apocalypse), Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner and Kodi Smit-McPhee (as younger incarnations of the original trilogy characters Cyclops, Jean Grey and Nightcrawler, respectively) only bolsters the ensembles appeal. Except this time Singer and scribe Simon Kinberg give the players precious little to sink their teeth into."
They say that the film functions best when it focuses on the new trio, and Empire single out Nightcrawler in particular as the antidote to the film's "leaden" feel. So at least there's some promise for the franchise going forward (and it surely will).
(Incidentally, that image there doesn't actually happen in the film. So...)
