Zombie talks Halloween remake

1149520559_halloween_myers.jpgSince it's Halloween, it seems fitting that Bloody Disgusting have posted an interview that director Rob Zombie had with MTV about his forthcoming Halloween remake. Things have been suspiciously quite since the project was annouced, so these little tidbits of details are very welcome.... "I want the lead character to be Michael Myers.... "He's not just a faceless thing floating around in the background and then you focus on these girls. I feel that that's where you can make it different and that's where you can make it more intense.""Michael Myers and Jason and Freddy and Pinhead aren't scary anymore because they're so familiar. I thought we have to find a way to go back and start fresh and remove everyone's preconceived ideas about what they think this character is because no one thinks they can be scared by it again. It's almost like Santa Claus.""Horror-movie remakes for the most part don't work...They just imitate the original. They don't try to do something new and different, they just follow it. And if you're going to follow the original, then there's no point because that movie already exists." Zombie goes in a lot more detail in a quite in depth article over at MTV which you can read by clicking here. At least Zombie's realised that you can't remake a classic shot by shot and expect it to work, like he says (and what I've been saying for a long time) you have to add something fresh and new to the material. At the same time though you can't go too far in that direction and not respect the original's idea and formula. It's difficult for sure but not impossible, Zack Snyder'sDawn of the Dead in 2004 managed it. I like that he is going to try and make the character of Myers genuinely scary again but I'm not to sure if making him the main character of the piece will work. A Nightmare on Elm Street sequels tried that by making Krueger the main character and it never worked as it made the villain more friendly and made you care very little about the people he was murdering. Still I wish this remake wasn't happening. I mean they can remake The Hills Have Eyes or When A Stranger Calls anytime they like because even though it shows a complete lack of originality from Hollywood, I haven't got much vested interest in their source material. But Halloween is different. It's a classic. It's one that shouldn't be messed with. You can't remake Halloween, just like you couldn't remake The Omen or The Wicker Man and make it good. I guess we have a whole year to get use to the fact that one of the best horror movies of all time is going to be remade, as it's due to hit our screens Halloween 07. source - mtv, bloody disgusting
