10 All Time Greatest Boss Battles From Metal Gear Franchise
3. The Boss (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater)
The story of the Boss is one of the most iconic in the Metal Gear series.
Originally presented as a villain, The Boss in, in fact, loyal to the American cause through and through. She pretends to betray her homeland to protect the world from nuclear war, with the goal of recovering the Philosopher's Legacy, a huge cache of almost limitless funds.
She's so dedicated to this cause and preventing the world from falling into ruin, that she ultimately sacrifices herself at the hands of her protogé, Naked Snake, in one of the series' most memorable boss encounters.
Taking place in a field of blossoming flowers, the fight cleverly makes use of camouflage (itself a massive theme throughout Snake Eater) and it's up to Snake to use every trick in his arsenal to find The Boss in the flowers and slowly wittle down her health or stamina bar.
The Boss won't take things lying down though - armed with Patriot assault rifle and deadly with her fast-paced CQC techniques, she'll strike quickly and efficiently if you don't play the fight stealthily.
The Boss, ultimately, is the catalyst for the series as a whole. Not only is she the biological mother of Ocelot, but her ideals led to Naked Snake - aka Big Boss - rejecting his country and striking out on his own. This, in turn, resulted in the Les Enfants Terrible project, and the birth of his 'sons', Liquid and Solid Snake. The growth of the Patriots is also attributed to the Boss's will - Major Zero misinterpreted it, and ultimately ended up creating something that would control the human race for years to come.
