1. Super Mario Maker
For years and years Nintendo fans dreamed of one day being able to create their own Mario platformers, combining elements from the past in order to make something totally new. Sure, it was technically possible by dismantling ROMs, but the technique was inaccessible to the vast majority of gamers.
At least, it was until September 2015, when Nintendo released Super Mario Maker, a game creation system specifically used for creating 2D Mario platformers.
Super Mario Maker is perhaps the perfect justification for the Wii U gamepad, allowing players to swiftly select tiles, items and enemies, placing them just as quickly. It's impossible to imagine how such a game would work using a traditional controller.
Not only can players combine elements from four different Mario platformers, they can upload their creations to the internet and play other people's levels, too, meaning one purchase of Super Mario Maker equals a lifetime of Mario content. And that's just awesome.
