10 Ambitious Gameplay Ideas That Broke Everything
1. Skells - Xenoblade Chronicles X
Much like the Marauders, there are absolutely those who swear by Xenoblade Chronicles X's Skells - massive pilotable mechs which are unlocked roughly half-way through the game's 80-or-so-hour campaign.
In theory they sound fantastic, right? Except they're a glaring example of a seemingly additive feature which really only ends up taking away and hampering the rest of the experience.
After the initial honeymoon period of the mechs wears off, they trivialise both combat and exploration to the point of tedium, especially once you upgrade your Skell's flight module and can traverse the game world extremely fast.
Now to be completely fair, you're in no way obliged to use Skells for most of the game - nothing's stopping you walking around on foot - but it's clear that developer Monolith Soft wants you to and that, basically, you're "supposed" to.
Once those giant hunks of metal show up dozens of hours in, it's Game Over.
