10 Announced Video Games That Mysteriously Disappeared
2. Skull & Bones
Clearly, the success of Assassin’s Creed
IV: Black Flag has demonstrated to developers that there’s something in this
open world pirate business. With huge, explorable worlds being de rigueur in
gaming just now, who wouldn’t want to adopt a Captain Jack Sparrow-esque avatar
and set out to conquer the high seas?
Sadly, it’s tougher than it may seem to make such a title tick. The open ocean is… well, just that, and the risk of a The legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker style huge, empty sea is great.
Rare’s Sea of Thieves has had some success with the open world PvP pirate game concept, though that title too was very barren at first. Ubisoft Singapore’s Skull & Bones, however, seems to have been sunk entirely.
First being showcased at E3 2017, this more ‘realistic’ and tactical take on pirate life has been delayed several times since. It hasn’t been given a solid release window in the three years since, and is currently targeting a vague release window of (possibly) late 2020 or early 2021.
