10 Annoying Characters That Stopped Great Video Games Being Perfect
7. Raiden - Metal Gear Solid 2
It seems almost cruel that a character can be judged as annoying because of who they aren't rather than who they are, and suggesting Raiden is an infuriating character just because he isn't Solid Snake would be totally unfair. Fortunately, however, we can criticise him anyway, because what he's always been just awful.
For a start, Raiden is a whiner. Moving from the badass approach that Snake brought to the original Metal Gear Solid to this is an incredibly frustrating experience, especially given that this person is supposed to be some sort of equal to his predecessor. The extent of his bitching gets so bad that you'll start to wonder if he ever even had any training or induction before this mission; it's just so hard to root for him.
It's also frustrating that Raiden's intriguing backstory is so underdeveloped in the second game. Admittedly we got to see more of this in later additions, where Raiden underwent somewhat of a reprieve, but it didn't help the character in MGS 2.
This sequel was a wonderful game by itself, but so many people refuse to look fondly upon it simply because of of its whiny, one-dimensional protagonist. Oh, and that hair was awful, too.
