It's genuinely surprising that it's taken this long for somebody to develop an online multiplayer game centered around dodgeball, but Knockout City proves that it's most certainly been worth the wait.

On the surface its team-based carnage may seem simple enough, but the game dares to build on the rules of dodgeball with its own canny accentuations.

For starters, you're not confined to a gymnasium but larger, more expansive maps, and there are numerous different types of balls for players to grab hold of, which will grant players special abilities such as turning the ball into a bomb or allowing them to jump higher.

There's also far more to the game than merely throwing or dodging - you can fake-out other players, tackle them, change the trajectory of your throw, and so on.

Despite its colourful aesthetic and accessible gameplay, Knockout City is a deceptively deep game with a powerful "just one more match" quality.

It'll live or die on the strength of its community in the coming months, but as the game's smartly been made available on Xbox Game Pass, it just might go the distance.
