10 Awesome Features In Upcoming Video Games We Can't Wait To Use
5. A Semi-Open-World Sandbox - Amnesia: The Bunker
The Amnesia series has prided itself on delivering uniquely terrifying survival horror experiences in which the player is largely defenseless without weapons and must typically rely on running and hiding.
But the upcoming fourth game in the series, Amnesia: The Bunker, will boldly deviate from this model by both giving the player a gun and, most enticingly, ditching the franchise's relative linearity.
The Bunker, a horror set during the First World War, will instead take a semi-open-world approach, placing players in a sprawling sandbox with a focus on exploration, with multiple ways to progress through the story in place of specific scripted events.
While going the open-world sandbox route would be so, so wrong for a lot of franchises, in the case of Amnesia it feels like a snug fit.
For as claustrophobic and tense as the three prior games were by their confined nature, expanding that to a larger-scale survival horror experience has some seriously scary potential.
If developers Frictional Games can overcome the usual open-world trappings and ensure The Bunker still feels as tightly curated as its predecessors, they could have a franchise-best effort on their hands here.
