4. Castle Shikigami 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDORuIwmR-U There's little doubting that Castle Shikigami 2 is a fun game, revelling in its very demented sense of weirdness, milking it for every drop and also making us laugh along the way. It's a challenging vertical shooter, though one that has become infamous for its dreadfully poor voice acting, exacerbated by the diabolical manner in which the actors are directed, as well as having to read some hilariously mangled translations of Japanese dialogue. This not only makes it hard to piece the story together, but it really makes it hard to keep track of who is who and which characters are aligned with which, making for an experience best enjoyed for its thrilling action and for its hilariously surreal dialogues, which most of the time make no sense whatsoever. Characters speak in a way that doesn't ever really connect; they make non-sequitur statements frequently, and what's clear is that a translator has tried to capture a Western sense of humour but has absolutely failed, though ironically, the end result is pretty damn funny all the same. To make head or tail of the above video, you probably need a pHD. And yet, in its badness, it is sort of hypnotic; I could sit through this asinine dialogue for hours. Great game, too.
