Although it wasn’t the first horror house that players would get to explore in video games (the original Alone In The Dark releasing a few years earlier), The Spencer Mansion from the first Resident Evil game has since become one of the most famous video game locations of all time.

When a series of strange events are reported to have occurred on the outskirts of Raccoon City, the elite S.T.A.R.S Alpha Team is sent to investigate. However, after they're chased into the nearby abandoned mansion by a pack of vicious dogs, they discover that the place is full of flesh-eating zombies.

Despite taking place in one location, there's more than enough variety within the mansion and grounds to hold the player's interest. From the lavish entrance hall to the underground lab, each area is as interesting as what came before.

The fixed camera angles only heightened the tension as players made their way down the narrow hallways, unable to see what lies just offscreen. Even backtracking through previously explored areas wasn't safe, with the fear of Crimson Heads appearing being one of the tensest feelings the series has conjured.

Without the Spencer Mansion, survival horror games wouldn't have been the same.
