10 Awesome Moments That Defined The N64
4. Doing A Barrel Roll (Star Fox 64)
Star
Fox 64 – the remake of the original – was an innovative shooter, combining the
best aspects of flight-simulators and rail shooters to create a wonderful
amalgam of the two. Critically, the game was celebrated for its impressive
visuals, smooth animations, open-ended pathways, expressive voice-acting and
awesome soundtrack, all of which combined to create an experience unlike
anything else ever released, on any console.
The game includes multiple gameplay options, including corridor mode in which players are tasked with manoeuvring themselves around the screen, avoiding obstacles and shooting incoming enemies.
The Arwing – the protagonist’s choice of spacecraft – is capable of numerous stunts, including a somersault in which players can completely reverse an opponent’s advantage, flanking them in a single movement. Besides that, the ship is also capable of performing a ‘barrel roll’ – a special manoeuver in which the entire ship is spun horizontally – to avoid enemy laser cannons.
Not only is the move incredible effective, it’s also downright iconic, cementing the phrase “do a barrel roll” as perhaps the single most recognisable gaming meme of all time.
