10 Awesome Moments That Defined The N64
5. Making Pikachu Ride The Wave (Pokemon Stadium)
Pokémon
Stadium allowed players to battle their Pokémon in a 3D environment simply by
connecting their N64 consoles to their handheld devices via a transfer pack. At
the time, it was a novel concept, watching Pokémon caught in a 2D handheld RPG
battle in stunningly rendered 3D environments themed around the anime TV show.
There were also plenty of easter eggs scattered throughout the experience too, including a secret animation which many players (myself included) considered a myth, known only as ‘Surfing Pikachu’.
To unlock the animation – which required an extensive amount of work – players had to somehow teach Pikachu to use Surf, despite it being a water-based move, and Pikachu being an electric type Pokémon.
In order to accomplish such a tremendous feat, players had to finish the entire R-2 Prime Cup Master Ball Division using any combination of five Pokémon, and a Pikachu caught from either Pokémon Red, Blue or Yellow.
Once done, a message would appear reading “You Won Using Pikachu”, at which point players would be prompted to replace any move in their arsenal with Surf. When performing the move specifically in Pokémon Stadium, Pikachu will always jump aboard his tiny surfboard and ride the waves right into his opponent’s face.
It’s pretty great, honestly.
