7. Mario and Sonic Platformer
For people of a certain vintage, the idea of seeing Mario and Sonic together in a game was the pinncacle of video game crossovers. Not only would it marry together two of gamings most iconic franchises but it would create a sense of unity amongst the warring Sega and Nintendo fans.
The millions of prayers from fans were finally answered back in 2007, when it was announced that the portly-plumber and speedy-hedgehog would finally be teaming up for a game together - only it wasn't quite what fans originally expected...
What we got was Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, essentially a bog-standard collection of Olympic mini-games that happened to feature Mario and Sonic characters. Fans were even more dismayed to find out that the original plans for the game were much closer to both franchise's origins.
In an interview with the game's chief producer Osamu Ohashi, he stated that they ran into issues regarding the best way to merge the two characters into one cohesive package. He noted that both characters come from vastly different worlds and had gameplay approaches and mechanics that felt at odds with one-another, so putting them in the neutral setting of a party game was the easiest way to bring them together at last.
