Though the series has declined after parting ways with original developer Bungie, you'd be hard-pressed to find an video game analyst who doesn't rate Halo as one of the seminal franchises in the medium.

This is particularly true of Halo 2, which became one of the first online FPS titles to really capture the imagination of console gamers thanks to its frantic gameplay and smooth matchmaking that allowed players to quickly join the fight.

Unfortunately, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end and though the servers for the game were officially set to shut down in April 2010, the final session concluded almost a month later as fans fought to get one final firefight in.

The superfans commitment did not go unnoticed by Bungie, and those who had continued playing until the dying days of Halo 2's multiplayer servers were invited to try the beta for Halo: Reach.
