Emerging during a time when seemingly every major media franchise was throwing their hat in the ring to get a piece of the MMOG pie, Star Wars Galaxies offered fans the chance to experience the era of the acclaimed original trilogy in an online role-playing game. Perhaps unsurprisingly for a game that catered to such a massive audience SWG quickly became a fan favourite on its release in 2003, and boasted almost half a million players just months after launching.

However, existing in such a crowded market meant that evolution was imperative to ensure survival, and while initial expansion packs were well received by the burgeoning install base, a major 2005 update proved to be dramatically unpopular with the game's fanbase.

The major upheaval intended on making the game more accessible actually invalidated the hard work of many of SWG's adherents by making options such as choosing to be a Jedi available from the start after gamers had previously slaved away to receive the honour.

Ultimately, while the overhaul proved largely unpopular, SWG was still a fun title that had a devoted audience, so when servers were finally shut down in December of 2011 fans were understandably disappointed.
