2. Submitting To Ocelot's Torture - Metal Gear Solid

In the original Metal Gear Solid, Solid Snake is eventually captured and subjected to electroshock torture by Revolver Ocelot.

The player can either button-mash their way to withstanding the torture, or let their life bar drain down and "submit" - both are viable options to keep progressing through the story.

Now admittedly, resisting or submitting to torture isn't much of an active choice on the victim's part, but if you lack the dexterity to button-mash effectively, you might assume that submitting to Ocelot really isn't all that bad.

But it is. Oh, it is.

As soon as you give up, Ocelot says he'll kill Meryl, but not before having some fun with her first. This certainly seems to imply that players will get a chance to rescue Meryl later in the game, but that's devastatingly not the case.

If you submit, you'll find Meryl's corpse at the tail-end of the story and that's that. For your failure, though, Otacon will give you the best item in the game for future playthroughs - the Stealth Camouflage, allowing you to disguise yourself from all conventional enemies. Silver linings and all that...
