10 Badass Gaming Heroines That Could Have The Men For Breakfast

6. Commander Shepherd

The Mass Effect series broke boundaries in an effort to make the player's connection with the main character closer than any game before. To this end the option of playing the entire game as a female version of Shepard proved that female leads in games are not just capable of being on par with the men but, in this case, even better. 'Femshep' as she quickly became known, was not just another skin option for the player. Experiencing the story as a female lead changed the whole perspective of the narrative. Interactions with various characters feel so different even though the dialogue is identical. Imagine a world where a female character's abilities were not limited or questioned because of her gender €“ that is what Mass Effect offered. Combined with a superior quality of voice acting delivered by Jennifer Hale, Femshep was the preferred choice for a large number of players. One in five players are estimated to have used her as their character model (which is quite a lot when you think about it) but the marketing department unfortunately did not get this memo which meant the male version of Shepard had an almost clean sweep of all the posters, artwork and advertising for all three games in the series.

I have one golden rule: There is no such thing as a guilty pleasure. Any song or film that makes you feel good doesn't need justifying.
