10 Badass Gaming Heroines That Could Have The Men For Breakfast
5. Clementine
Telltale Games had a surprise hit in 2012 with their episodic title The Walking Dead. In the style of their previous games, The Walking Dead followed a choose-your-own-adventure style decision making system. It told the story of escaped convict Lee Everett who rescued a young girl named Clementine and took her under his wing. So what makes Clementine so special? Playing as Lee, the attachment players felt to Clementine was unexpected. As they took on the role of her adoptive parent the game became less about fighting zombies and more about building a safe community for Clem and protecting her as she grew up in the most hostile of worlds. That fact that there was a character people cared about this deeply was special, but it was the episodic nature of the title that made it unique. Having to wait a month or more to see what would happen next caused floods of gamers to express their uniquely strong connection with Clementine. The hashtag #forclementine was frequently used on twitter as players faced the dilemmas posed by the final two episodes. A female character that isn't a prize or a sex object. A female character that was able to draw the paternal side out of the most laddish of gamers and put them through an emotional wringer. Clementine was no action hero but she kicked the asses of every player who was put in the position of protecting her.
